Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our legal services, fees, and what to expect when working with our firm.

What areas of law does your firm practice?

Mary G. Commander Attorney at Law P.C. practices in several areas including personal injury, family law, criminal defense, business litigation, real estate law, and estate planning. Our diverse practice allows us to serve clients with a wide range of legal needs throughout the Norfolk, Virginia area.

How much does an initial consultation cost?

We offer free initial consultations for most case types. During this meeting, we will discuss your legal matter, explain your options, and help you understand the potential outcomes. There is no obligation to retain our services after the consultation.

How are your legal fees structured?

Our fee structure varies depending on the type of case. Personal injury cases are typically handled on a contingency fee basis, meaning you pay nothing unless we recover compensation for you. For other matters such as family law or criminal defense, we may charge hourly rates or flat fees. We will discuss all fee arrangements in detail during your initial consultation.

How long will my case take to resolve?

The timeline for resolving a legal matter varies significantly based on the type of case, its complexity, and whether it goes to trial. Some matters can be resolved in weeks, while others may take months or even years. During our initial consultation, we can provide a more accurate estimate based on the specific circumstances of your case.

Will I work directly with an attorney?

Yes. While our support staff handles administrative matters, you will work directly with one of our licensed attorneys throughout your case. We believe in maintaining close communication with our clients and ensuring they have access to experienced legal counsel at every stage.

What should I bring to my initial consultation?

Please bring any documents related to your legal matter, including contracts, correspondence, police reports, medical records, photographs, or court documents. Also bring a list of questions you may have and any relevant dates or timelines. The more information you can provide, the better we can evaluate your case.

Do you handle cases outside of Norfolk?

While our office is located in Norfolk, we represent clients throughout the Hampton Roads region and across Virginia. For certain matters, we may also be able to provide representation in other jurisdictions. Please contact us to discuss your specific needs.

What is your success rate?

We have achieved favorable outcomes in the vast majority of our cases, including over $50 million in recoveries for personal injury clients. However, every case is unique, and past results do not guarantee future outcomes. We evaluate each matter individually and provide honest assessments of the likely outcomes.

How do I schedule an appointment?

You can schedule an appointment by calling our office at (540) 683-5370, sending an email to marycommander@commanderlaw.co, or using the online scheduling form on our Contact page. We strive to respond to all inquiries within one business day.

What is your refund policy?

We offer a 30-day refund policy for unused retainer fees. If you decide to terminate our services within 30 days of payment, we will refund any unused portion of your retainer after deducting fees for work already performed. Please see our Refund Policy page for complete details.
